What the China – Central and Eastern Europe Summit does not represent

The visit of the Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of China to Bucharest has a truly special importance. Like many others, it is historical because we cannot do better (yet). More “historical” is Romania’s attempt to finally shape its policy towards China, after years of going from one mistake to another. Let us be clear though – it is only an attempt.

Instead, it has found itself sandwiched between an increasingly aggressive Russia, an EU in crisis and growing disunity, a more stand-offish and disengaged United States and now a more and more unstable and unpredictable vicinity.

Together with Central European Policy Institute (CEPI) we participated in organizing a roundtable-event in Bratislava:  the first international reunion between Serbia and Kosovo at the highest level – after a more than a decade of no dialogue – in the same day when Serbia and Kosovo signed the historical agreement of normalization in Bruxelles.
